“My daughter has no idea that every time she unwraps a book, she is unwrapping a piece of me. I choose those gifts carefully, balancing my own love for the story with how I will feel if she doesn’t like it. I could not understand why she abandoned From the Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler and took it as a personal achievement when she declared To Kill a Mockingbird one of the best books ever. My lifelong love of reading has taken on an added dimension as I have shared all my favorite books with her, and she has done the same. Ferst Readers is doing so much more than just sending books to children. It is helping those children discover, and share, a love of reading with their parents. The stories they are reading together will become a part of them, just like the pigeon, of Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus fame, has become a part of me and my children. I am delighted to have the opportunity to work with the Ferst Readers to give the gift of early literacy, and a love of reading, to families across Georgia. ”
