Ferst Readers Beneficiary of the Competitive Common Good Funds Grant Award from the Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta
Madison, GA- October 27, 2015 -Ferst Readers is one of this year’s recipients of the Common Good Funds grant from the Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta. The Common Good Funds program provides operating support for nonprofit organizations and is the Community Foundation’s most competitive grant. Eligible nonprofits must go through an extensive application process and out of the initial 110 eligible Letters of Intent submitted for this 2015 grant cycle, only 15 nonprofit organizations were selected to be Common Good Funds grant recipients.
Ferst Readers promotes reading and learning success by mailing free, developmentally appropriate books every month to children from birth up until age five and by providing parents with supportive material that reinforces the importance of early learning and encourages them to read frequently with their children. Georgia has more than 680,000 children under five, with Ferst Readers serving close to 30,000. The foundation began mailing books in April 2000 and to date has mailed more than 4.3 million books to children across the state and beyond.
“We have worked really hard to ensure we meet the high standards set by the Community Foundation in order to be considered for this grant. Receiving funding for operating support is the dream of every nonprofit, but perhaps even more valuable is the opportunity for an in-depth - almost microscopic – evaluation of our program’s infrastructure and objectives and articulating that effectively. We are a better organization by simply having gone through the application process,” says Betsy Wagenhauser, Ferst Readers president. “Receiving this grant is validating. It confirms for us that we are indeed solidly on the right path toward moving the needle on grade-level reading.”
